LILIN
TSENG
Lilin Tseng grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, where she received her BA in Graphic Design. There she quickly put her degree to use, working as a graphic designer for an advertising company as well as a part-time ESL teacher. She then furthered her education in the US by earning her MA in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) at The University of Kansas. She was employed by The International Trade Institute, a postgraduate language institute in Taipei World Trade Center, Taipei, Taiwan, as an English Instructor immediately after her graduation.
Through the association of trading business from her job, she had the opportunity to work as one of the bilingual staff members for a Taiwanese and US joint venture in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She went on and received her second master's degree and teaching certificates in Special Education while working in Virginia. She soon started her third career as a Special Ed Teacher-Councilor working with severely emotionally disturbed children. In this job, she enjoyed a sense of mission and of making a difference in her students' lives. However, troubles with her health dictated that she leave this fulfilling, yet challenging career, and reevaluate her life goals.
In the year 2000, as Lilin recovered from her illness and sought a new direction, she explored diverse media in visual art creations. She fell in love with creating mixed media sculptures. Making use of her graphic design and teaching backgrounds, Lilin incorporates art and storytelling elements in her work. She takes special interest in the emotional aspects of ordinary people, and most of her sculptures reflect on that. She also feels that producing these art works is a very powerful channel to validate one's existence, and she will continue to create for that reason alone.
